Huntington accurately assesses each student’s academic skills using a nationally normed standardized test (Scantron’s Performance Series) or practice exams (such as SAT or ACT) After being evaluated, we group students into smaller groups by the ability to be instructed by one teacher. Sizes of the groups are determined between us and you.
We use over 120 different reading curricula across 34 skill sets, over 50 different math curricula across 110 levels.
Huntington Learning Center is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. It preps for the SAT and ACT, as well as state and standardized exams. Huntington programs develop the skills, confidence, and motivation to help students of all levels succeed and meet the needs of Common Core State Standards. Founded in 1977, Huntington's mission is to give every student the best education possible.
Huntington aligns with the findings of the National Reading Panel by placing a strong emphasis on phonics, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies:
Methodology – integrate active learning techniques, modeling of skills and strategies and contextbased instruction
Phonemic Awareness – work closely with students using curriculums that teach word attack skills through instruction in phonics, syllabication and recognition of prefixes and root words
Fluency – engage students in repeated oral reading using decoding skills when new words are encountered
Comprehension – explicit instruction through cooperative learning where students are instructed to use these strategies with their corresponding grade level
Huntington integrates research-based curricula using many leading materials grounded in scientifically based research including:
Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (April 2000) by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics
Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000)
National Assessment of Educational Progress Mathematics Framework (NAEP, 2005)
Our remedial and functional mathematics curricula allow students to build skills in hand-eye coordination, basic math concepts and the representation of size and quantity
Huntington prepares students for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT by focusing on skill-building and test-taking strategies.
Students are taught Huntington-developed strategies for…
Evaluating question difficulty and question types
Managing time effectively
Attacking each test section with subject-specific strategies
We also provide targeted instruction to build math and reading skills to improve the student’s content knowledge
Huntington assess progress, performance and the student group’s learning plan on a continual basis through
Documentation: progress reports, observations during each session, solicited feedback from teachers on the students’ performance in school
Communication: regularly connect with your school to provide feedback through agreed-upon written reports and results of the tests administered at the beginning of and completion of the program to outline student progress
